The rise of remote work has changed the landscape of employment, and one question on the minds of employers and employees alike is whether this flexibility should influence salaries. Recently, we ran a poll on LinkedIn, asking: Should remote work impact salaries? The responses were quite telling:


  • Yes - Lower salary: 5%

  • Yes - Higher salary: 4%

  • No: 84%

  • Never thought about it: 7%


It's clear that a significant majority believe that remote work should not affect pay, but the nuanced opinions from those who participated in the discussion shed light on the complexity of this issue.


The Case Against Adjusting Salaries for Remote Work

Many respondents who voted "No" argue that salary should be tied to the role’s responsibilities, experience, and skill set — factors that don't change regardless of where the work is performed. One respondent, a long-time remote worker, commented, "The salary should reflect the skills, experience, responsibility, and seniority of the role. Whether performed on-site or from home, these factors don’t change, so neither should the salary."


This perspective highlights a key point: Remote workers often bear additional costs, such as higher utility bills and home office expenses. As another respondent pointed out, "I pay for better broadband, extra electricity and gas, extra water use, my own tea, coffee and milk. Paying someone less because they are remote is discrimination." The sentiment here is that location doesn’t diminish the quality of work and, in some cases, might even improve it due to fewer distractions.

Flexibility as a Benefit, But Not at the Expense of Salary

While remote work does provide the flexibility that many employees, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, appreciate, it’s not seen as a justification for reduced pay. One respondent, a working parent, shared how remote work allows them to manage family life and still excel professionally. They emphasised that "restricting people would mean you won’t get the best people," and remote working parents often give more because of their appreciation for the flexibility.


The Minority View: Should Salaries Be Higher or Lower?

Although a small percentage, 5% of respondents felt that remote work should result in lower salaries. This view likely stems from the perception that remote workers save on commuting costs. However, one respondent challenged this by asking if those who live close to the office should also be paid less because they have minimal commuting costs.


On the other hand, 4% of respondents believe that remote work should actually come with higher pay due to the costs of setting up and maintaining a home office. Employers, some argue, might also save on overhead costs such as office rent, making it reasonable to redistribute those savings to employees.


Finding Balance: Should There Be Compensation Adjustments?

Rather than adjusting salaries, some suggest that employers could offer allowances to cover the additional costs remote workers incur. This would ensure fairness while acknowledging the financial implications of working from home. One participant summed this up: "If an employer wanted to reflect those costs, it is better done through an allowance rather than salary."


Conclusion

The debate over whether remote working should influence employee salaries is far from settled, but the overwhelming majority of respondents to our poll believe that salaries should remain tied to the job’s value, not the location where it's performed. As remote work continues to shape the future of employment, employers will need to consider how to fairly balance flexibility with fair compensation.
